Atmospheric Circulation Flashcards

Q

How different parts of the world have different temperatures, due to sun rays?

A

At the equator the sun’s heat hits the earth head on, therefore it is warmer as heat is more concentrated.
At the poles, the sun’s heats hit the earth at an angle, therefore it is cooler, as heat is less concentrated.

Q

How different parts of the world have different climates?

In terms of precipitation!

A

At the equator air rises because of the concentrated warming effect of the sun’s heat. When moisture in the rising air cools high up, its condensates and forms clouds. At the poles air sinks because it is cooler. Moisture does not condense to form clouds; therefore it is usually dryer.

Q

Why diffferent part of the world have different pressure?

A
  • Cooler air sinks, so higher pressure on the surface
  • Warmer air rises, so lower pressure on the surface.

Q

How different part of the world have different biomes?

A
  • Where cool air is sinking at the poles, we got cold deserts.
  • Where warm air rises between the Polar and Ferrel cells we have temperate climate
  • Where cooler air sinks between the Ferrel and Hadley cells we got hot desert.
  • Where warm air rises at the equator we have tropical climate
