Atmosphere Unit 2 Flashcards
Maritime
Coastal Vancouver, Halifax, St. John's Heavy Precipitation Mild Climate Near Large Bodies of Water
Continental
Inland Windsor, Winnipeg, Calgary Little Precipitation Seasonal Extremes Not Near Water
Which Climate Region Do We Live In?
Lower Lakes
Which Regions Temperature and Precipitation Varies with Elevation?
Mountain
Which is moderated by the Gulf Stream and the Labrador currents?
Prairie
Identify three cities that are ‘continental’ and three that are ‘maritime’.
Continental: Windsor Winnipeg Calgary Maritime: Vancouver Halifax St. John's
Why do continental climates have a larger temperature range?
The temperature range is great because there is no large water body to moderate the hot temperatures of summer and the cold temperatures of winter.
Canada’s Climate Regions
7 Arctic Sub-Arctic Pacific Mountain Prairies Lower Lakes Atlantic
How does precipitation occur?
- warm air with moisture rises, causing it to cool and condense, forming clouds
- clouds become heavy with moisture and causes precipitation to fall
How are Land Forms Made?
-Relief and Wind impact climate sometimes causing relief precipitation to fall on the
windward side of a mountain. Eg. Vancouver experiences a lot of relief precipitation
as warm air from the Pacific Ocean rises with elevation on the windward side of the
Coast Mountains.
Diagram of Relief Precipitation
A mountain where the left side is windward (clouds, evaporation and water) and the right is leeward (dry)
Factors that affect Climate
Latitude Ocean Currents Wind Elevation Relief Near Water
Why is Iqaluit colder than Windsor?
Latitude, further from equator than Windsor and cold ocean currents (Labrador current)
Why does St. John’s receive so much fog?
Ocean Currents, cold and warm (Labrador and Gulf)-> causes fog
Why does Vancouver receive so much precipitation but Calgary doesn’t?
Relief Barriers, Vancouver is on the windward side. Also, because of the Alaska current.
Why is Kelowna colder than Calgary even though it is further south in latitude?
Elevation, colder mountain range
Why are Windsor’s summers so humid?
Near Water, Great Lakes
Latitude, closer to equator
How does Climate affect Canadians?
Canada will receive heavy snow, precipitation and ice. Also they will get drought, forest fires, heat waves and extreme weather conditions. Some provinces and territories are bordered by water so they could go below sea level if glaciers/ice melt due to heat.
Climate Graphs
Calculate degrees Celsius and precipitation on the bar graph. Label Celsius in red (line graph) precipitation in blue (bar graph) and the growing season at the 6° mark in green.
How might climate change alter Canada’s regions?
Arctic and Sub- Arctic regions won’t be so cold anymore. Glaciers and ice is melting. Warmer regions will get even hotter.
Impacts of Global Warming
Health Food Melting Ice Rise in Sea Level Unpredictable Weather (extremely dry/wet) Deforestation Forest Fires Temperature

Greenhouse Gases
Arrow down to earth( some light gets trapped by greenhouse gases)
How do we contribute to increased CO2 in the atmosphere? How can we
decrease our CO2 emissions?
Using energy (cars) Burning coal Pollution Industrial pollution We can stop it by switching to fluorescent lightbulbs, planting trees, being/using energy efficient Car Pool Reduce Water
Carbon Cycle
It’s the cycle where coal turns into energy that we use in our day to day lives. (Cooling, heating)
