Atmosphere Test Flashcards
Why does the Temperature within the atmospheric layers change?
Some parts of the atmosphere are warmer because they have a high percentage of gas which absorbs solar energy, while other parts of the atmosphere are cooler because they have a lower percentage of gas molecules.
How and why does air pressure change Altitude in the atmosphere?
Pressure decreases as altitude increases ,air pressure changes as you go up because they are less air particles because it is colder
What Gases and their percentages make up earths atmosphere?
78% nitrogen 21% oxygen and one percent other
Why is it so important to protect the ozone layer?
The ozone layer protects us from the sun ultra violet radiation this is important to protect the ozone layer of the sun rays will be too strong and will hurt the earth
What is radiation?
Transfer of energy through electromagnetic waves
What is convection?
Energy due to the movement of matter
What is conduction?
The transfer one object to another object through direct contact
What is kinetic energy
The energy that is the motion of waves, energy increases as mass increases as speed increases
What is potential energy
The energy that an object has due to its position condition and chemical composition
List the types of potential energy
Stored mechanical, gravitational, nuclear, chemical
List the types of kinetic energy
Thermal, electrical, motion sound, radiant
Summarize the Coriolis effect
The apparent curving of a path due to earth’s rotation
Explain why air moves and identify the source of energy that causes air movements
It is caused by the uneven heating of the sun causes temperature temperature differences in the air, so the cooler air sinks because it is denser and the warmer it rises.
Explain why the atmosphere is so important
The atmosphere provides gases that organisms need to survive including oxygen and carbon dioxide, the atmosphere blocks the harmful high energy radiation coming from space, and it keeps earth warm
Explain natural and man made air pollution
Air pollution can come from natural sources such as volcanic eruption’s wildfires and dust storms, man-made air pollution comes from fossil fuels gases and particulates
