ATLA basic 1 Flashcards
Prohibited area
An airspace of defined dimensions over the territories of a State within which flights of aircraft are prohibited
Elevation
The vertical distance of a point or level, on or affixed to the surface of the earth, measured from mean sea level
Restricted area
An airspace of defined dimensions above the land areas or territorial waters of a State, within which the flight of aircraft is restricted in accordance with certain specified conditions
Aeronautical meteorological service
Those facilities and services that provide aircraft with meteorological forecasts, briefs and observations as well as any meteorological information and data

List Air Traffic Control Service
- Aerodrome Control Service
- Approach Control Service
- Area Control Service
Aerodrome
A defined area on land or water intended to be used either wholly or partially for the arrival, departure and surface movement of aircraft
GAT
Flights which are conducted in accordance within the rules and regulations of the ICAO
List Prefixes in routes
U - Upper airspace
T - TACAN navigation
K - Helicopters

ATC instruction
Directives issued by ATC for the purpose of requiring a pilot to take a specific action
List Basic designators for ATS routes
A, B, G, R, H, J, V, W
Transition Level
The lowest flight level available for use above the transition altitude
Area control service
Air traffic control service for controlled flights in controlled sectors
Transition Altitude
The altitude at or below which the vertical position of an aircraft is controlled by reference to altitudes
Ceiling
The height above ground or water of the base of the lowest layer of clouds below 20 000 ft covering more than half the sky
Controlled aerodrome
An aerodrome at which air traffic control service is provided to aerodrome traffic
What can be dropped from an aircraft?
Ballast in the form of water, fine sand, fuel, tow ropes, tow banners and similar objects if dropped or sprayed at places where no hazard to persons or property exists
ATS route
A specified route designated for channeling the flow of traffic as necessary for the provision of air traffic services
STARs
Special routes established to lead arriving aircraft to the initial approach fix (IAF)
Height
The vertical distance of a level, a point, or an object considered as a point, measured from a specific datum
List What is air traffic control service used for?
A service provided for the purpose of:
- preventing collisions between aircraft
- preventing collisions in manoeuvring area between acft and obstructions
- expediting and maintaining an orderly flow of air traffic
- providing advice and information useful for the safe and efficient conduct of flights
- notifying appropriate organisations regarding aircraft in need of search and rescue aid, and assist such organisation as required
Manoeuvring area
That part of an aerodrome used for the take-off, landing and taxiing of aircraft excluding apron(s)
Apron
A defined area for aircraft loading/unloading passengers, mail or cargo, fuelling, parking or maintenance
What is a waypoint?
Waypoint is a significant point defined by co-ordinates in latitudinal and longitudinal reference
Level
A generic term relating to the vertical position of an aircraft in flight and meaning variously, height, altitude or flight level
