Meperidine used to be the most commonly used opioid agonist analgesic for women in labor throughout the world. It overcomes inhibitory factors in labor and may even relax the cervix. Because tachycardia is a possible adverse reaction, meperidine is used cautiously in women with cardiac disease. Other medication options with fewer side effects are now available for use during labor.

Indications for Gastric Lavage
typically performed in acute-care settings, especially in cases of poisoning or drug overdose for which swift removal of stomach contents is required. Patients who have gastric bleeding are sometimes treated with an iced saline lavage, which involves instillation and aspiration of iced saline solution through a nasogastric tube to empty the stomach of blood and to slow the bleeding at its source. Lavage may also be used as a therapy for hyper- or hypothermia to help stabilize the body temperature.
