ATC
A service provided by appropriate authority to promote safe, orderly and expeditious flow of traffic.
ATC Clearance: An authorization by ATC for known air traffic to proceed under specific conditions within controlled airspace.
Note: VFR traffic may be operating in same area without ATC knowledge.
Clearance Compliance: may not deviate from clearance unless an amended clearance has been obtained.
- Exceptions - Emergency, Canceling IFR, ATC clearance causes deviation from regulation
- Common IFR deviations - altitude violations, course clearance violation, airspeed violation, missing a compulsory reporting point.
ATC phraseology- “immediately”, “at pilot’s discretion”, “cross at/above/below”
If no clearance delivery is available, ground control will read you your clearance. If no tower, call or radio the FSS.
ATC radar beacon = squak code
Departure control is the first facility to establish radar contact.
ATCC - “Center”
FSS - originates NOTAMS, VFR search and rescue
