Ataxic Dysarthria Flashcards
Main problem?
Problem with motor control (timing and coordination)
Locus of lesion
Cerebellum
Cerebellar control circuit
What is most affected?
Articulation and prosody
Clinical characteristics of AD
- Unsteady stance and gait
- Titubation
- Nystagmus
- Hypotonia associated with excessive pendulousness
- Dysmetria
- Dysdiadochokinesis
- Intention and terminal tremor
- Possible cognitive disturbances
Speech Tasks
Conversational speech, reading, AMRs, repetition of sentences with multisyllabic words
Titubation (AD)
Involuntary tremor
Rhythmic nodding or shaking of the head, neck and trunk
Nystagmus (AD)
Vision condition in which the eyes make repetitive, uncontrolled movements
Hypotonia with excessive pendulousness (AD)
reduced muscles tone / hanging loosely
Dysmetria (AD)
Inability to control the distance, speed, and range of motion necessary to perform smoothly coordinated movements
Dysdiadochokinesis (AD)
Inability to perform rapid alternating muscle movements
Intention and terminal tremor
Intention: Type of tremor that occurs during a purposeful movement and becomes more pronounces as the movement ends
