Q

A store is having a 25% off sale on all items. If a customer wants to buy a shirt that normally costs $50, how much will they pay after the discount is applied?

A

The customer will pay $37.50 after the discount is applied.

To calculate this, you would first calculate the amount of the discount: $50 * 0.25 = $12.50 (0.25 is equal to 25%). Then, you would subtract the amount of the discount from the original price to get the final price: $50 - $12.50 = $37.50.

Q

You have to be to work at 9AM, if you live 60 miles away and travel at 30 MPH, what is the latest you can leave to arrive at work on time?

A

The correct answer is 7AM

In this question we are attempting to see the latest we could leave to arrive to work on time. Considering we need to be at work by 9AM and we can only drive at a speed of 30 MPH and need to travel a total of 60 miles we can solve this by simply dividing the our speed against the total distance so:

60 / 30 = 2

Giving us 2 hours to make this trip, now we just need to backtrack our time by this amount so:

9AM -> 8AM -> 7AM

You would need to leave at 7AM to arrive by 9AM.

Q

A train traveling at 60 miles per hour leaves a station and another train traveling in the same direction at 75 miles per hour leaves the station 2 hours later. How long will it take for the second train to catch up with the first train?

A

The answer is 8 hours.

At the end of the first two hours, the first train has traveled 60 x 2 = 120 miles and the second train has traveled 0 miles. The difference in distance covered by the two trains is 120 miles.

So the equation should be:

60t = 75t - 120

Solving for t, we get:

t = 120 / (75 - 60) = 120 / 15 = 8 hours

So it will take the second train 8 hours to catch up with the first train.

Q

A store is having a sale on shirts. If a shirt regularly costs $20 and is now on sale for $15, what is the percentage discount on the shirt?

A

The answer is 25%.

To find the answer, you need to subtract the sale price from the regular price and then divide that amount by the regular price and multiply by 100 to express the answer as a percentage. The calculation is:

$20 - $15 = $5
5 / 20 = 0.25
0.25 * 100 = 25%

Q

A delivery truck uses 10 gallons of fuel to travel 100 miles. How many miles will the truck travel on 50 gallons of fuel?

A

The answer is 500 miles.

To find the answer, you need to use the ratio of fuel consumption to distance traveled (10 gallons of fuel to travel 100 miles) to determine how far the truck will travel on 50 gallons of fuel. The calculation is:

100 miles / 10 gallons of fuel = 10
50 gallons * 10 = 500 miles

Q

A contractor needs to buy 600 feet of fencing to enclose a rectangular area. If the length of the rectangle is three times its width, how wide is the rectangle in feet?

A

The width of the rectangle is 75 feet.

To find the answer, you need to use the formula for the perimeter of a rectangle (P = 2L + 2W) and the given information (L = 3W and P = 600) to solve for W. Setting up the equation gives you:
600 = 2L + 2W
600 = 2(3W) + 2W
600 = 6W + 2W
600 = 8W
W = 600 / 8
W = 75
So, the width of the rectangle is 75 feet and the length is 3 times that, or 3 * 75 = 225 feet.
