Q

List 3 pieces of evidence for the Big Bang Theory (not the TV show!).

A

1) Galaxies are moving away from us
2) Cosmic background radiation
3) Quasars
NOTE: these are not the only answers, and you should be able to describe the reason that each supports the Big Bang Theory

Q

What is the difference between a comet and a meteor?

A

Meteor has entered our atmosphere and is producing light because of friction with air particles. Comets produce light because of their interaction with the sun. Comets have larger, fanned out tails than meteors and last much longer. Comets are usually found in large, exaggerated elliptical orbits around the sun whereas meteors are pieces of rock and dust usually from the asteroid belt.

Q

Ptolemy proposed an earth centered model, and created looped orbits to follow what observation of the night sky?

A

Retrograde motion of the planets (the wanderers:)

17
Q

Inflation occurred as part of the big bang theory: when did it occur and what happened?

A

Inflation happened at the start of “the big bang”, during this time space expanded at a rate faster than the speed of light (ahhh laws of physics).

18
Q

The distance of the Sun to the Earth is 1.495 x 10^11m, how long will it take the Sun’s light to reach Earth travelling at the speed of light (3.0x10^8m/s).

A

1.495x10^11m divided by 3.0x10^8m/s
= 498s
in minutes = 8.3minutes
