Astronomy Flashcards
Galileo (1564-1642)
Godfather of astronomy. Discovered that planets orbited the Sun and not Earth
The Sun
Burns 600 million tons of hydrogen every second. Is 99.8% of our solar system’s mass.
The Solar System
Then Sun, 8 planets, 3 dwarf planets, billions of asteroids comets and meteoroids
Mercury
Closest to Sun. Smallest. No satellites.
Venus
2nd closest to sun. About same size as earth. poisonous as heck. Shiny.
Earth
Only planet with H2O. One large satellite (moon)
Meteor
Space rock that burns into nothing before hitting the ground.
Meteorite
Space rock that actually hits the ground before burning up. Likely killed off the dinosaurs.
International Space Station
Most expensive thing ever made. Satellites clipped together. Used for research.
The moon
Likely formed out of the earth when a Mars-sized meteorite hit Earth.
Mars
4th planet from Sun. Half the size of Earth
Asteroid Belt
Between Mars and Jupiter. Pulled by Jupiter’s gravitational pull so could never become a planet.
Jupiter
Largest. Gas giant. Made of hydrogen gas. Almost became a sun. 63 moons
Saturn
Gas giant. 6th from Sun.
Titan
A moon of Saturn. 2nd largest moon in solar system. Has an atmosphere and looks like Earth.
