Astronomy Flashcards
Name 5 things that orbit the sun.
Planets, Dwarf Planets, Artificial Satellites, Asteroids, comets
What are comets made of?
Dust and Ice
What are Asteroids made of?
Rock and metal
What is the force that creates orbits?
Gravity
What is the force called that means that an object orbit travels at a constant speed but is constantly accelerating?
Centripetal
What does the force of gravity depend on?
Mass and distance
When you are closer to a planet, do you need to travel faster or slow to stay in orbit.
Faster.
Who thought that at the centre of the solar system was the earth?
The Ancient Greeks
What did the heliocentric model of the solar system state?
That the Sun was at the centre of the solar system, but everything orbited in perfect circles.
What proved the heliocentric model wrong?
Galileo observing Jupiter’s moons orbiting around Jupiter.
What does the Steady State Theory State?
The Universe has always existed, and that the Universe is expanding and constantly creating matter as the Universe expands.
What does the Big Bang Theory State?
About 13.8 billion years ago, the whole Universe was a very small, extremely hot and dense region. From this tiny point, the whole Universe expanded outwards to what exists today.
Does red shift support the steady state theory, the big bang theory or both?
Both
Does CMBR support the steady state theory, the big bang theory or both?
The Big Bang theory.
What is CMBR?
The cosmic microwave background (CMB, CMBR) is electromagnetic radiation as a remnant from an early stage of the universe
