Astronomy Flashcards
How to remember the order of the planets?
My (mercury) Very (venus) Excellent (earth) Mother (mars) Just (jupiter) Sent (saturn) Us (uranus) Nine (neptune) Pizzas (pluto)
Where is the asteroid belt in our solar system?
In between mars and saturn
What is the weight of a man of mass 85kg on the moon? (the gravitational field strength on the moon is 1.7)
Weight = mass x gravitational field strength 85 x 1.7 = 145N
Relationship between Orbital speed, time period and orbital radius
Orbital speed = (2 x pi x orbital radius)/time period V = 2(pi)r/t
How do you convert km to km/day into km/s?
Divide it by (24 x 60 x 60)
Mercury?
No atmosphere Heavily cratered
Venus?
Thick atmosphere of mostly CO2
Mars?
Thin atmosphere Some craters
Asteroid belt?
Asteroid: irregular lump of metal In orbits around sun
Jupiter?
Gas giant (mostly hydrogen)
Saturn?
Gas giant (mainly hydrogen) Ring system of rock an ice in orbit of planet
Uranus?
Gas giant (mainly hydrogen) Discovered with telescope 1781
Neptune
Discover with telescope 1846
What does the strength of the gravitational field between two objects depend on?
Mass Distance apart
What is the gravitational field between two objects INVERSELY proportional to?
The distance between them squared
