Astronomy Flashcards
What does the Solar System consist of?
The sun, eight planets (that orbit the sun), dwarf planets thar orbit the sun, and asteriods and comets
Where is the sun in the solar system?
At the centre of the solar system (helio-centric)
Give 2 examples of dwarf planets
Pluto and ceres
Mnemonic devide to remember planets
My very early morning jam sandwhich usually nauseates
Name the planets in the solar system
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
What are smaller planets made of
Rock
What are larger planets made of
Gas
How do the planets rotate
Some rotate in the opposite direction or on a skewed axis to the other planets.
Why do planets rotate like they do
Due to past collisions throwing its axis off balance
Why do larger planets have rings
They have rings as their gravitational field is so strong it attracts debris
What did the first solar system model suggest
That the earth was at the centre, and the planets, moon, and sun orbited the earth (geo-centric model)
What is the helio-centric model
Where the sun is at the centre of the solar system instead of the earth
What happens to the gravitational force as planets orbit the sun
It causes the planets to constantly change direction
What happens to the speed as planets orbit the sun
The speed remains constant
What happens to the velocity as planets orbit the sun
The veloity is always changing hence the force causes the planet to accelerate without increasing its speed
