Astronomy Flashcards
Geocentric model
Ptolemy who was Greek
He put earth in the centre of everything with the planets and the Sun orbiting around the Earth
Heliocentric model
Nicolaus Copernicus
15th century
Decided the sun was at the centre of everything
How did we know that heliocentric was the correct model
Galileo Galilei in the 17th century used a telescope to observe four of Jupiters moons that he discovered. He plotted their movements and showed that not everything orbited the Earth which led him to support the heliocentric model
Comets
Are made of ice
Current solar system
eight planets five dwarf planets comets asteroids
These all move in elliptical orbits around the Sun
Some planets have moons orbiting around and which are natural satellites
