When the bronchioles react to allergens making them inflamed leading to a smaller intake of oxygen. Also mucus is produced.
What are the symptons of asthma?
Breathlessness tight chestted Wheezing Mucus Coughing Tired
How do we monitor asthma in patients?
Spirometery
Inhalers - preventers and relievers
What might the patient’s care needs consist of?
Relier and Prevent Inhaler
Avoid triggers
Steriods
Antibiotics
What treatments are available?
Nebuliser
Inhaler-Preventer and Reliever
Steriods
What are the asthma triggers?
Pollen Pollution Smoke Cold air Exercise Allergens
What does an a spirometry exam measure?
can measure maximum forced expiration – again indicates functional ability of lungs.
What does a peak flow exam measure?
used to measure rate of exhalation, done over time and compared to norms, indicates dilation/constriction of airways
What do preventer inhalers do?
Reduces inflammation
Reduces sensitivity of airway
What do Relivers inhalers do?
relaxes muscles of bronchii/bronchioles
dilates airways
more air passes through
What colour are reliver inhares?
blue
What colour are preventer inhalers
Brown red and orange
