First (operational) jet-powered aircraft?
Messerschmitt ME-262
Which aircraft was designed to target the hard to hear Russian subs?
SH-60B Seahawk
Which controls control roll? and pitch?
Ailerons control roll, elevators control pitch
This would measure the width of a boat:
Beam
Front most part of a ship:
Bow, forcastle, stem
Vertical wall of a ship:
Bulkhead
What does V(sub x) mean (in flight)?
Speed that will allow for the best angle of climb
What does critical angle of attack mean?
he critical angle of attack is the angle of attack which produces maximum lift coefficient. This is also called the “stall angle of attack”. … At the critical angle of attack, upper surface flow is more separated and the airfoil or wing is producing its maximum lift coefficient.
What does stall mean?
When airflow separates from the surface it stops generating lift, thus the wing stalls
What is a freeboard?
A vessel’s freeboard is the distance from the waterline to the upper deck level, measured at the lowest point of sheer where water can enter the boat or ship.
Define draft:
The draft or draught of a ship’s hull is the vertical distance between the waterline and the bottom of the hull (keel), with the thickness of the hull included; in the case of not being included the draft outline would be obtained. Draft determines the minimum depth of water a ship or boat can safely navigate.
What is the gunwale?
The upper edge or planking of the side of a boat or ship.
Define windlass:
For mooring anchors
“Which airplane was the main torpedo bomber used in WWII that flew for 15
years in the Navy?

What torpedo bomber was introduced just before the battle of midway and had a 20 year career?
TBF Avenger
What do the guys in the green hats do on flight deck?
- Catapult and arrest gear crews,
- maintenance, quality control and cargo handling personnel
- Hook runners, photographers mates, ground support trouble shooters
- landing signal enlisted personnel
Visual Flight Rules:
- The pilot must be able to operate the aircraft with visual reference to the gorund and by visually avoiding obstruction and other aircraft
- If weather is below VMC then the pilot required to use instrument flight rules
Low flying rules
- 500 ft rule, aircraft must maintain an altitutde of 500 feet above the surface, exceept over open water or sparsely population areas. Aircraft may not operate closer than 500 ft to any person, vehicle or structure.
- 1000 ft rule, aircraft must maintain an altitude of 1000 ft above the highest obstacle within a horizontal radius of 2000 ft of the aircraft over any congested area of a city, town, or settlement
The F-9F Panther was which of these:
Jet
What was the first “heavy carrier-based bomber”
A-3 Skywarrior
Strategic Air Command’s front-line bomber in the 1950s:
B-36
If a helicopter is in forward flight, the difference between the lift of the forward-going and aft-going blades is called what?
Dissimilar lift
Where should you land if landing behind a heavy aircraft?
After the heavy aircraft touched down
Vertically aligned cylinder used for pulling ropes:

Another name for the bow of a ship:
