Assumptions of Biological Psychology Flashcards
The biological approach tries to explain how we think, feel and behave in terms of
physical factors within the body
The central nervous system consists of
the brain and spinal cord
Connecting to the CNS are
the nerves that serve the body
For simple reactions, the spinal cord alone can generate a response as opposed to complex reactions where
decisions must be made and the brain takes over
The brain has two hemispheres which are joined by the
corpus callosum
The anterior pituitary gland is
responsible for releasing hormones into the body
The function of the occipital lobe is
to process visual info
Short term memory is thought to occur in the
hippocampus
The part of the brain responsible for emotions and aggression is the
amygdala
Sensory info is integrated in the
parietal region
The Thalamus is
near the base of the brain, it passes on info from the senses
The role of the prefrontal cortex is to
mediate conflicting thoughts, make decisions between right and wrong and to predict future events
Genes are strands of a chemical called
DNA found in our cells
Genes control physical processes in the body and can be
dominant or recessive
Dominant genes show their effect even if there is only
one copy of the gene in that pair
