Assumption two Flashcards
What is assumption two of the biological approach?
- Localisation of brain function
What does this assumption suggest?
- That certain areas of our brain are responsible for different functions
What is the cerebral cortex and what does it do?
- Deeply folded area, covering the surface of the brain
- Responsible for high order brain functions, e.g. memory
What is the cerebral cortex divided into?
- Four regions
- The frontal lobes
- Parietal lobes
- Temporal lobes
- Occipital lobes
What is the function of the frontal lobe?
- Thinking
- Creativity
- Has been linked to our personalities
What is the function of the parietal lobes?
- Receive sensory information, e.g. temperature, touch and pain
What is the function of the temporal lobes?
- Memory processing
- Processing speech
What is the function of the occipital lobes?
- Visual processing
- Receiving information directly from the eyes
What did Paul Broca do?
- Studied eight patients with language problems
- Examined their brains after death
- Found they had damage to a specific area of their left hemisphere
What is “Broca’s area” associated with and where is it located?
- Speech production
- Located in the posterior portion of the frontal lobe
What did Carl Wernicke do?
- Discovered another area of the brain that was involved in understanding language
- His patients could speak but were unable to understand language
Where is “Wernicke’s area” located and what is it associated with?
- Located in the posterior portion of the left temporal lobe
- Associated with understanding language
