Assortment of part 2 things to know Flashcards
What are the main types of large mass movements?
Falls
Topples
Slides
Translational movement
lateral spread
(water induced) flow
The nature of falls is
rapid, rocks are in free fall
Rock topples are caused by
forward rotation about a pivot point under gravity
Just like a thwomp
Slides are caused by
shear failure of rocks causing slumps
The characteristic knock on effect of translational movement is the formation of
a pressure ridge superseding the slip surface
What do we observe in a case of lateral spread?
shear failure or liquefaction along horizontal soil layers
How is land mass moved in a flow case?
eroded and carried away by water
What are the four types of retaining structures?
gravity wall
cantilever wall
tieback wall (pinned with soil/rock nail)
braced wall
Plasticity is defined as
soil ability to undergo irrecoverable deformation without cracking/crumbling
Plastic limit (wp) is defined as
lowest water content at which soil remains deformable without cracking/crumbling
liquid limit (wl) is defined as
lowest water content at which soil cannot maintain its shape
explain serviceability limit state
geotechnical installation is past safety threshold but is not totally falled
explain ultimate limit state
geotechnical installation is unusable due to catastrophic failure
