What are Eating Disorders?
Eating Disorders are caracterised by disturbed body image attitudes and extreme preoccupations with weight and shape. Eating disorders manifest as persistent disordered eating behaviours.
What is Anorexia?
Anorexia:
An intense fear of weight gain and/or a disturbed body image
That motivates severe dietary restriction or other weight loss behaviours.
What does Anorexia Nervosa mean in latin?
The disorder anorexia nervosa, from the Latin words meaning “nervous loss of appetite”.
What is Bulimia and what does it involve?
Bulimia
Recurrent episodes of binge eating.
Compensatary behaviours e.g purging to prevent weight gain.

Reccurent episodes of compulsive overeating that leads to distress without efforts to compensate for weight gain.

The avoidance or restrictive food intake in the abscence of body image concerns and fear of weight gain

Body image is a multidimensional psychological construct encompassing how we: Think, Feel and Act towards our bodies.
It his recognised as one of the most consistent predictors of ED symtomatology.
Why do Body Image concersn often begin in Adolescence?
Because of:
- Pubertal weight gain
- Wavering self-esteem
- Strong desire to fit in
body image concers or worries start during adolescence.
Describe Sociocultural Theory
Sociocultural Theory poists that social agents (family, peers, media) convey a strong need to coform to societal body ideals
