Assisi- Norman MacCaig Flashcards
Why did MacCaig say that the beggar was like a dwarf?
The beggar was diminutive in size (small).
This also dehumanised him.
What techniques are used in the quote “like a half-filled sack”
Comparison, dehumanising and also a simile.
How is “tiny twisted legs” a use of visual imagery
because a ‘t’ looks like a twisted leg
How does this quote tell us again how small the beggar is to the size of the church. “outside the three tiers of churches built
in honour of St Francis,
”
The churches are extremely grand looking. Very wide, tall and decorated. Compared to a wedding cake. This makes the beggar appear even smaller
.
Who does the beggar have an advantage over because he is living?
The beggar has an advantage that he is living and St. Francis is not.
What is the linking theme in this quote “priest explained
how clever it was of Giotto
to make his frescoes tell stories
that would reveal to the illiterate the goodness
of God
”
Irony/hypocrisy
What are the techniques used in this quote “I understood
the explanation and
the cleverness.”
Metaphor, irony/hypocrisy
Analyse this quote “clucking contentedly,
fluttered after him as he scattered
the grain of the Word.”
This is an example of alliteration (helps extend the metaphor clucking, fluttering and grain)because the tourists sound happy which implies they’re ignorant. This is an example of onomatopoeia as the sound is chatty and happy.
He is “feeding” then “grain of the word” which is a metaphor as he isn’t actually feeding them grain he is speaking to them to them about biblical teachings. This also has irony/hypocrisy as the priest doesn’t follow them very well.
What is the connotation of this quote “they who had passed
the ruined temple outside, whose eyes
wept pus, whose back was higher
than his head, whose lopsided mouth”
Connotation-not being cured for or not been looked after. By ignoring the beggar we are disrespecting Saint Francis and God laws.
Analyse this quote “Grazie in a voice as sweet
as a child’s when she speaks to her mother
or a bird’s when it spoke
to St Francis.”
Simile because it says the his voice is high pitched and soft like a little girl.
Connotation- small and innocent.
A child speaking lightly to her mother with love.
Sing song like a bird.
Metaphor suggests how beautiful and sweet he sounds.
