Metaphor- the beggar is the ruined temple.
“Ruined”- the denotation is to be broken and wrecked and the connotation is that the beggar hasn’t been cared or looked after
“Temple”- the denotation is a place of worship and the connotation is that because we’re ignoring the beggars “temple” we are disrespecting the laws of God and St Francis.
