Assignment terminology Flashcards
artifact
additional electrical activity that arises from sources other than the heart or brain
atherosclerosis
cholesterol and calcium fatty deposits within the arteries causing the arteries to thicken or harden
baseline
a usually initial set of critical observations or data used for comparison or a control
cardiac cycle
the complete sequence of events in the heart from the beginning of one beat to the beginning of the following beat: a complete heartbeat including systole and diastole
ECG cycle
consists of 5 waves: PQRST corresponding to different phases of the heart activities
Apnea
a temporal or final ceasing of breathing, usual during sleep
bounding pulse
a pulse that feels as though your heart is pounding or racing
Bradycardia
when an individual has a resting heart rate of under 60 bpm
celsius scale
aka centigrade scale; a temperative scale based on 0 degrees for the freezing point of water and 100 degrees for the boiling point of water
eupnea
normal respiration
dysrhythmia
an abnormal rhythm; such as brainwaves or heartbeat
stethoscope
a medical instrument for listening to the action of someone’s heart or breathing, typically having a small disk-shaped resonator that is placed against the chest and two tubes connected to earpieces
varicose
affected by a condition causing the swelling and tortuous lengthening of veins, most often in the legs
systole
a period of contraction of the ventricles of the heart that occurs between the first and second heart sounds of the cardiac cycle
-causes the ejection of blood into the aorta and pulmonary trunk
tympanic membrane
aka eardrum, when soundwaves reach the tympanic membrane that cause it to vibrate
ischemia
a restriction of blood supply to tissues, causing a shortage of oxygen that is needed for cellular metabolism
segment
portion of ECG between two waves
hypoxia
a reduction in the oxygen supply to the tissues
electrocardiograph
instrument used to record electrical activity of the heart
interval
length of wave or length of wave with a segment
spirometer
an instrument for measuring the air capacity of the lungs
normal sinus rhythm
the rhythm of a healthy heart
fever
a temperature above 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees Celsius
Aneurysmorrhaphy
the surgical suture of the sac of an aneurysm
bradypnea
abnormal slowness of respiration
thrombolytic
causing the breakup of a blood clot
angiospasm
spasmodic contraction of the blood vessels with increase in blood pressure
cardiac catheterization
a procedure where a long thin tube, a catheter is inserted in an artery or vein in your groin, neck or arm and threaded through the blood vessels to your heart
thrombosis
formation of a blood clot within a blood vessel
hemochromatosis
a disorder where too much iron builds up in your body
atheroma
an abnormal accumulation of plaque within the inner layer of the wall of an artery
plasmapheresis
a process in which the plasma is separated from the blood cells
endocarditis
inflammation of your heart’s inner lining
hemangioma
non-cancerous growth of blood vessels
