In order to reaccept states back into the Union Lincoln proposed that 10% of the state had to pledge allegiance to the Union and sign an oath against slavery. Once Lincoln died this was not effective

A

A

All over the south black codes began popping up limiting the amount of freedom black americans could have, forcing blacks to work as workers or domestic servants. In 1855 and 1866 congress allowed freedman bureaus to override these laws.

In 1866 congress defined what it meant to be an american citizen. If you were born in the US or moved here you could become a citizen if you were naturalized. It barely passed and soon in order to be readmitted into the union the state was required to accept the amendment.
