Assignment 3 - thigh and pelvis Flashcards
The most inferior of the deep lateral rotators of the hip
Quadratus Femoris
Muscle that originates both on the ischial tuberosity and on the femur.
Biceps femoris
The “upper twin” of the deep lateral rotators of the hip joint.
Gemellus superior
The most visible of the three muscles named “adductor” in an anterior view.
adductor longus
Only antagonist to knee flexion that is not seen superficially.
vastus intermedius
Flexes, abducts, and may help medially rotate – all at the hip. Inserts into the IT band.
tensor fasciae latae
The third of the deep lateral rotators, from most superior down to most inferior.
obturator internus
Only muscle that we build that is an antagonist to both hip extension and knee extension
sartorius
The deep lateral rotator that originates most anteriorly from the pubis and ischium.
obturator externus
Origin is the superior ramus of the pubis, inserts into a line named for itself on the femur.
pectineus
Extends at the knee, originates on the medial lip of the linea aspera.
vastus medialis
The only adductor muscle that is a significant extensor of the hip.
adductor magnus
Deeper muscle that extends at the hip and flexes at the knee.
semimembranosis
Typically the thickest muscle of the body, excellent lateral rotator and extensor of the hip.
gluteus maximus
Covered in part by the IT band, an antagonist to knee flexion.
vastus lateralis
Serves as an insertion point for both the TFL and gluteus maximus.
iliotibial tract
The only deep lateral rotator of the hip not asked for in another description.
gemellus inferior
Tightness in this muscle may lead to or be a response to some sciatic nerve problems.
piriformis
The smallest of the three “adductor” muscles.
adductor brevis
Medial muscle that is an antagonist to both hip abduction and knee extension.
gracilius
The more superficial, more medial muscle of the hamstring group.
semitendinosus
Deep medial rotator of the hip, inserts onto the anterior greater trochanter of the femur.
gluteus minimus
Covered in part by the IT band, this muscle would be stretched by hip adduction.
gluteus medius
Only muscle that flexes at the hip and extends at the knee.
rectus femoris
