Assignment 3 Magnus Flashcards

1
Q

McCabe-Thiele Method

A
  • There are an operating and equilibrium line.
  • The operating line is constructed
  • Equilibrium stages is the number of stages need in order to obtain the desired concentration for the product.

Q

Counter current extractor

A

It is counter current extraction, so the high concentration in the feed solution is washed by a solvent that all ways have a lower concentration. Stage 1 have higher concentration than stage 2

Q

Leaching

A

Leaching is the extraction of a certain desired material or component, from a solid into a liquid. In this example its MgSO_4 in a solid feed, which is treated with a solvent warm water.

Q

Operating line

A

Operating line is found by finding the composition of all streams, This is done by finding the mass balance over the entire system. And then for each stage. The operating line is then found for the composition of the stream between all stages (x1, y2) (xa, ya) etc.

Q

Equilibrium stages

A

Each of the stages is in equilibrium, which means that the concentration of MgSO_4 is the same in the x leaving and the y leaving streams.

Q

What is filtration?

A

Q

Rotary drum filter

A
  • A rotary drum filter works like so, the wheel is partly submerged in the filtrate (slurry) the wheel is cover with a cloth which makes sure the solid doesn’t pass through however there is suction from the middle going out which means that all moisture gets sucked through, into the central duct, the cake stays on the wheel gets water with clean water for impurities which is the sucked through the central duct. With leaves the wheel with the solid products, which is the pushed out in one end, and cut with a knife into a desired size
