assignment Flashcards
Underlying bio- point 1
Enzymes are biological catalysts which are used to speed up cellular reactions, but remain unchanged in the process.
Underlying bio- point 2
These enzymes are made from proteins which are made from a sequence of amino acids joined by peptide bonds.
Underlying bio- point 3
Enzymes work on molecules called substrates. Each substrate is specific to a particular enzyme as the shape of the enzyme is complimentary to the shape of the enzymes active site.
Underlying bio- point 4
During an enzyme-controlled reaction the substrate temporarily joins to the active site of the enzymeto form an enzyme-substrate complex. Products (molecules produced at the end of the reaction) are formed at the end of this reaction.

Underlying bio- point 6
A factor that affects enzyme activity is concentration of the substrate. Each enzyme will have an optimum substrate concentration. Optimum meaning the concentration which the enzyme is most active at. The enzyme activity will be highest at the enzyme’s optimum substrate temperature.
Aim
To investigate the effect of hydrogen peroxide concentration on immobilised yeast catalase activity.
Method
Different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide were added to measuring cylinders. I dropped a yeast ball into each measuring cylinder and timed how long it took to sink to the bottom and rise to the surface.
