Answer
Underlying Physics
- As the height from the table increases, the starting potential energy of the trolley increases. This is evident through the formula E p =mgh
- The angle the trolley is released from will have an effect on the velocity at the bottom of the ramp. Ultimately, this will have an effect on on the final distance the trolley reaches from the ramp
- In order to calculate the kinetic energy at the bottom of the ramp, the formula EK=1/2mv 2
- All types of energy are measured in Joules (J)
- The final distance in the experiment will be measured in Metres (m)
Brief Description
Answer
Analysis
Both my graph and the online source provide similar results. This is made evident as both graphs shown clearly highlight a relationship which proves that as the launch angle increases, the distance travelled increases.
Conclusion
Overall, I can conclude that the increasing the launch angle of a ramp increases the stopping distance of a trolley. This has been made evident through my results table, which when turned into the graph and compared to my online source conveyed similar results. Thus, all research and analysis has led me to reach this vital conclusion
Evaluation
One factor which has had a significant effect on the reliability of my results was accidentally providing extra force whilst releasing the trolley down the ramp.
One way I could’ve minimised the effects of this was by installing a gate into my experiment. This would make sure the trolley was being released from the exact same point and also would also help in properly starting the trolley from rest
