Assignment Flashcards
Identify and describe the different types of reef structures: Fringing
Fringing = connected to land
Identify and describe the different types of reef structures: Barrier
Barrier = around land but with water between
Identify and describe the different types of reef structures: Atolls
Atolls = Ring reef
Identify and describe the different types of reef structures: Cayes
Cayes = sandy, small island
Identify and describe the zones of the reef and their characteristics: Lagoon
Much light, not much oxygen, not many animals, flat
Identify and describe the zones of the reef and their characteristics: Back Reef
Flat, very bright, not many animals, not much oxygen
Identify and describe the zones of the reef and their characteristics: Reef crest
Very flat, not much oxygen, not many animals, very bright
Identify and describe the zones of the reef and their characteristics: Fore Reef
Deeper, darker, many animals, much oxygen
Identify and describe the zones of the reef and their characteristics: Reef shelf
Deep, dark, many animals, much oxygen, colder
Back reef, Reef shelf, lagoon, fore reef, reef crest
Lagoon, back reef, reef crest, fore reef, reef shelf
Bony fish compared to scale fish
Bony fish= many bones and scales
Cartilaginous fish = many cartilages
Mollusca = ?
Soft body
Enchinodermata = ?
Spiny skin
Arthropoda = ?
Have feet (f.e. crabs)
Annelida = ?
Worms
Cnidaria = ?
soft bodied stinging animals
Porifera = ?
Sponges
Describe the basic coral anatomy
Belongs to cnidaria, mouth and tentacles, soft corsls and hard corals, habe polyps looking like a pipe
Compare hard and soft coral
Hard Coral has a calcium skeleton, while when soft coral die they disappear, polyps have other structure, soft coral has 8 tentacles and hard coral 6
Identify and describe different disturbances on the reef (Crown of thorns, pollution, coral bleaching)
Crown of thorns = too many of them, eating coral
Pollution = destroys coral
Coral bleaching = too hot algae goes out of coral, coral bleaches, and dies after 6 weeks when algae come back.
Identify abiotic factors
Are non-living environmental factors such as light, pressure, wind, oxygen
Describe and analyse tidal movements
Are the regular rise and fall of sea levels in response to the gravitational forces exerted by the moon and sun on earth
Identify and describe plankton
Small organism, many different kinds of plankton, phytoplannton consists of sigle celled aglae and zooplankton consists of tiny animals
Describe haloclines, thermoclines and pycnoclines and analyse their effect on nutrient distribution
Halocline = layer of rapidly changing salinity
Thermocline = layer of rapidly chaning temperature
Pycnocline = layer of rapidly changing density
Organism distribute
