Assignment 1 Flashcards

1
Q

Define or explain, giving examples, the meaning of the following terms:

a. Monomer

A

MONOMER: an atom or small molecule that may bind chemically to other monomers to form polymers.

c. Degree of polymerisation

A

DEGREE OF POLYMERISATION: Average number of monomeric units per molecule

EXAMPLE:

  • If a polymer has a molecular weight of 10 000g/mol
  • If the repeating units each have a molecular weight of 100g/mol
  • DP = 10 000/100 = 1000
