What is a Norm-referenced assessment?
An assessment that ranks students based on their score. Used on large groups of students vs. individual (Bell Curve).
What is an Criterion-based assessment?
Criterion-referenced assessment is designed to measure skills and knowledge a student has mastered. Based on state standards.
Describe the Behaviorist approach to teaching
The teacher uses repetition and reinforcement to teach the curriculum.
Describe the Humanist approach to teaching
The teacher meets the needs of the student (see Maslow’s Hierarchy) in order to encourage self motivation to learn.
What is an “Objective?”
What the student will be learning and a map for teachers to achieve those goals
What is a “Learning Outcome?”
What students will produce or achieve
What is a “Goal?”
What teachers want the students to learn
What is a standardized test?
A state-wide, equalized test for all students, required to pass to next grade level.
What is an Alternative Assesment?
Used to gauge students’ understanding of the material. Also called authentic/comprehensive/performance.

What is a formative assessment?
Used during instruction, these assessments gauge students’ understanding of the lesson.
What is a diagnostic assessment?
Used before lesson or unit begins, these assessments gauge how much the student already knows about the given topic. Not graded.
