Assessment three Flashcards
Conformity
When people agree with others to avoid being rejected
Asch’s aim
how and why individuals conform
Asch’s procedure
- 123 male undergraduates
- 3 lines vs one line
- Lying confederates
- Repeated 12 times
- 35% conformed
Asch’s conclusion
People conform as they fear standing out
Factors affecting conformity
- Unanimity
- Group size
- Task difficulty
‘Child of its time’
When study took place the conformity levels are high, giving it a unique and inaccurate outcome
Unconvincing confederates
If the confederates were unconvincing, the participants would figure it out and be less likely to conform
Cultural differences
Conformity may be different for each culture and how they were raised
Lab experiment
Done in a lab, highly controlled
+ Can be repeated
- May cause behavioral changes/ unnatural behavior
Field experiment
Done in natural settings but still controlled
+ Reflects real life
- Less control
Quasi Experiment
In natural surroundings to understand the cause and affect of things
Extraneous variable
Anything that affects result of study
Natural experiment
In natural life, no interference only observation
+ Accurate, natural behavior
- Potential unethical situation
Independent Variable
What is changed
Dependent variable
What is measured
