Periodontal examination
plaque index

bleeding on probing
mobiblity
plaque index
disclosing solution applied and each surface examined for soft accumulations of plaque using WHO probe and recorded
plaque score = no of surfaces exhibiting plaque/no of surfaces total x 100
Periodontal probes
michigan-O probe with William’s markings and WHO-621 periodontal probe
probing pocket depth
gingival margin to base of pocket
clinical attachment loss
cemento-enamel junction to base of pocket
what does CAL>PPD mean?
gingival recession
what does PPD>CAL mean?
gingival swelling
What does bleeding on probing indicate?
inflammation in tissues; ulcerated pocket epithelium and increased vascularisation of connective tissue
what is bleeding on probing best used for
absence of bleeding indicates stability, presence of bleeding isn’t a good indicator of progression of periodontal disease
