What does BUBBLE VERNA stand for?
Breasts, Uterus, Bowel, Bladder, Lochia, Episiotomy Veins, Emotions, Rest, Nutrition, and Attachment
What can happen if the fundus is above the umbilicus and is boggy?
Could indicated excessive uterine bleeding resulting in blood collection and clots formed within the uterus. Also look for distention of the bladder.
Barring complications, how long should it take the uterus to approach its prepregnant size?
5-6 weeks
Why is it improtant to assess and evaluate lochia?
it helps determine the presence of hemorrhage and also assess for uterine involution.
What is Diastasis recti abdominis?
It’s a separation of the abdominal muscle that happens especially in women with poor abdominal muscle tone. Part of the abdominal wall has no muscular support and is formed only by skin, SQ fat, fascia and peritoneum. Especially pronounced after c-sections.
Why does urinary output increase during the early postpartal period (first 12-24 hrs)?
Due to puerperal diuresis in which the kidney must eliminate around 2000-3000 mL of extracellular fluid with the normal pregnancy.
How long does it take for a woman to retrun to their prepregnant weight?
About 6-8 weeks. They will lose 10-12 lbs immediately after birth due to loss of infant, placenta and amniotic fluid. Water weight will be loss during the early periods as well.
What does REEDA stand for?
REdness, edema, ecchymosis, drainage, and approximation
How can we prevent engorgement after the second or third day PP?
Mechanical methods of lactation supression such as a tight fitting bra.
Why should you delay intercourse if lochia is still present?
It signifies that healing is not yet complete.
Why is lactation suppressed during pregnancy?
Because of the high levels of progesterone.
