PBE preflight checks

How do you don and operate the PBE?
Open stowage box
OPEN VACUUM SEALED BAG BY PULLING RED TAG
Remove PBE from foil bag
Place both hands inside neck seal, palms facing each other and visor to front
Bend forward and insert head through neck seal
Ensure flap at front and back are extended
Adjust oro-nasal mask if necessary
PULL ADJUSTMENT STRAPS FORWARD TO ACTIVATE
Pull adjustment straps backwards to seal the mask over the nose and mouth
Ensure nothing in neck seal eg hair
PBE duration?
15 minutes
Should the PBE fail to start, explain what you would do?
PULL ADJUSTMENT STRAPS FOR A SECOND TIME TO DISLODGE THE PIN AND ACTIVATE PBE
IF THE PBE FAILS TO ACTUATE, THE ACTION OF FORCEFULLY EXHALING WILL START OXYGEN GENERATION
IF UNSUCCESSFUL, USE ANOTHER
How do you remove a PBE?
Move to a safe area
RELEASE ADJUSTMENT STRAPS BY PUSHING THE BUCKLES FORWARD
Insert both hands inside neck seal and guide PBE off
His would you dispose of a PBE?
Treat used PBE as a dangerous good. Place PBE in an atlas box then place into the lavatory and lock the lavatory door
PBE precautions?
Be careful not to damage the neck seal when fitting eg glasses, jewellery
Do not interfere with the neck seal once it is in place as this may allow smoke to enter into the PBE
Ensure long hair is contained within the neck seal inside the PBE
After use do not remove in fire vicinity due to oxygen saturation of the hair - brush hair with hands to remove oxygen particles
Do not use water to cool PBE
Take caution when removing the PBE as generator may be hot and cause injury

Correct number and location
Secured in brackets
MINIMUM 1500 PSI DISPATCH PRESSURE
Dust covers in place
No oil or grease on fittings
OXYGEN MASK PRESENT AND SEALED
Oxygen bottle operation?
Remove oxygen bottle from bracket and prepare away from pax
Secure bottle to self
Obtain and remove mask from sealed bag mask, ensure no kinks in tubing
Remove dust covers and insert metal connectors from mask into outlets
TURN ON USING ON/OFF CONTROL KNOB
CHECK OXYGEN FLOW TO MASK
LOOK TO SEE IF FLOW INDICATOR IN THE TUBE TURNS GREEN
LISTEN FOR HISSING SOUND
FEEL AIRFLOW ON CHEEK
Fit mask around nose and mouth and secure with elastic band
MONITOR O2 BOTTLE PRESSURE (GAUGE FACING CREW MEMBER) IF POSSIBLE DO NOT ALLOW BOTTLE TO FALL BELOW 50PSI UNLESS AN EMERGENCY
Turn control knob off when no longer required
Oxygen duration?
1 mask - 30 mins
2 masks - 15 mins
Oxygen precautions
Do not drop or bump oxygen cylinder
Do not handle oxygen bottle or mask with greasy hands
Do not use oxygen in the vicinity of any form of open flame
Remove excess heavy makeup or grease from the casualty’s face
When the gauge shows 50PSI if possible discontinue use
Halon preflight
Correct number and location

SAFETY PIN AND TAMPER SEAL IN PLACE
NEEDLE IN GREEN BAND
How do you operate a Halon?
PULL SAFETY PIN
AIM AT THE BASE OF THE FIRE
SQUEEZE THE HANDLE
SWEEP THE FLAMES
Halon duration?
10-15 seconds
Halon optimum range
1.5-2 metres
Halon precautions?
PBE should be worn
High concentrations of Halon can lead to dizziness, impaired concentration and coordination difficulties
Before discharging a Halon extinguisher in the flight deck, oxygen masks and smoke goggles should be donned and crew oxygen regulators set to 100%
Crash axe preflight?

Uses for crash axe?
To deal with physical obstructions when getting out of the aircraft
As a lever to pry open panels if the source of the fire is difficult to locate
As a survival tool
Megaphone preflight?
Correct number and location
Secure in bracket
SQUEEZE THE HANDGRIP UNTIL AUDIBLE CLICK IS HEARD
How do you operate megaphone?
Hold megaphone with one hand, do not place other hand around mouthpiece
SQUEEZE AND HOLD THE HANDGRIP
Speak into the mouthpiece holding the housing against the lips
When finished speaking release hold on hand grip
Adjust volume using the control dial on the side
Activate horn by pulling pin adjacent to volume control
To turn horn off replace pin or squeeze handgrip
Lifejacket preflight?
Correct number and location
Bag sealed
ORANGE IN COLOUR (CREW). YELLOW IN COLOUR (PAX)
Light duration on lifejacket?
10 hours
Lifejacket precautions?
Never partially inflate lifejacket prior to pulling the red toggle. Jacket may burst as CO2 will inflate beyond capacity
Never inflate lifejacket in the cabin
If jumping into the water, hold lifejacket to your body to prevent it riding over your head
ORT preflight?
Correct number and location
How to use ORT?
Remove from under crew seat
INSERT THE POINT END OF THE ORT INTO THE OXYGEN HOLE IN THE PSU
Oxygen mask will fall out
Return ORT to stowage
Infant lifejacket preflight
Correct number and location
Bag sealed
How do you operate infant lifejacket?
Remove jacket from bag
Put infants head through opening at top
Place crotch strap between infants legs
CHECK PRESS STUD AT TOP OF CROTCH STRAP IS FASTENED
PASS WAIST STRAP AROUND INFANTS WAIST AND CLIP TWO ENDS TOGETHER
TIE CROTCH STRAP TO SECURE CROTCH STRAP BETWEEN THE INFANTS LEGS
Pull waist strap tight to secure
When and how should the infant lifejacket be inflated?
Upon exiting the aircraft inflate lifejacket by pulling red goggles
First aid kit preflight?
Correct number and location
Sealed
What should you do before using first aid kit?
WHENEVER POSSIBLE THE PIC MUST BE INFORMED FIRST THAT THE KIT REQUIRES OPENING
Request via PA for a dr of medicine, paramedic or nurse to assist
DME Torch preflight

Secure in stowage with seal intact
Condition light flashes approx every 5-10 seconds
How do you operate DME torch?
Remove from stowage
TORCH WILL ILLUMINATE AUTOMATICALLY
Minimum DME duration?
30 minutes
DME maximum duration?
4 hours
Cabin crew jumpseat preflight checks?
SPRING LOADED SEAT PAN RETRACTS
SEAT LEVER LOCKING MECHANISM FUNCTIONS CORRECTLY (FWD JUMPSEAT)
No fraying of seatbelt or harness and no obvious holes
No twists in seatbelt or harness
How do you fasten your cabin crew harness?
Insert lap strap into buckle
Insert shoulder harness into buckle
Tighten lap strap and shoulder harnesses
ENSURE THAT BUCKLE IS CENTRAISED AND LAP STRAP IS LOW ACROSS HIPS
How do you unfasten cabin crew seatbelt?
Loosen shoulder harness
Loosen lap strap
ROTATE BUCKLE FULLY OPEN
