Assessment:
The gathering of information about students, the curriculum, and the school environment.
Authentic Assessment:
Aka “Performance Assessment”
Includes a task for students to perform and a rubric by which their performance on the task will be evaluated.
Presents students with real-world situations that require them to apply their relevant skills and knowledge.
Portfolio:
A purposeful collection of student work that tells the story of the student’s efforts, progress, or achievement in a given area.
Criterion Assessment:
AKA “Nom-Competitive Assessment”
Focuses on assessing students’ mastery of specific skills, regardless of how other students did on the same skills.
Norm-Referenced Assessment:
AKA “Competitive Assessment”
Forces students to compete with other students (norm referenced),
Formative Assessment:
Carried out during instruction to provide feedback on students’ progress and learning. It is used in monitoring instruction and promoting learning. Formative evaluation is a continuous process, but comparatively little use has been made of it.
