A

The US government prioritised the needs of white settlers over previous commitments it had made about Indian lands in the indian trade and the Intercourse Act of 1834. White settlement in the West increased as the treaty allowed for safe passage of white settlers along the Oregon trail.

Q

What did the Fort Laramie Treaty also mean for white settlers?

A

There was no longer a permanent Indian frontier between the eastern states of the USA and the Plains Indians. This meant homesteaders could cause tension with the Indians as they interfered with land owned by them. They disturbed the buffalo which would make the Indians angry as it’s their main source of food.
