Describe induction training
Induction training is usually offered to new employees and it covers background to the business, employment policies, terms and conditions, benefits to employees, facilities and health and safety measures
Describe on the job training
This is training that takes place in-house during normal working hours at the usual place of work and it is usually delivered by peers
Describe the 3 types of on the job training
Shadowing is when a new employee learns by watching an experienced worker.
Coaching is when an experienced worker watches the employee.
Mentoring is when a new employee can turn to a nominated coworker for support.
Describe a job description
A job description is a document prepared by the business which includes information about the job like the salary, location of the job, tasks and duties of the job and responsibilities the job holder will have
Identify the advantages and disadvantages of induction training
It helps staff settle in and become more productive more quickly. It ensures staff are familiar with health and safety procedures. However it takes time and may take other workers off their work.
Identify the advantages of on the job training
Trainees are still producing an output whilst learning, costs should be lower as training delivered in-house does not incur specialist fees and travel expenses, trainees become familiar with their own environment and equipment and the training is more specific to the job
Describe the impact of industrial action on employers
Lost production - can affect the ability to meet deadlines
Less work is done (slower productivity) - can affect reputation if customers don’t get their product/service
If the company is on strike a lot, suppliers can decide they don’t want to work with you because you are unreliable
Explain the benefits of training employees
Employees become more efficient at carrying out their work therefore productivity will increase. Staff motivation and morale increases, also increasing the quality of work therefore improving customer satisfaction. The image of the organisation will improve therefore increasing the number of customers and profit the business receives.
Describe an interview
An interview is a formal meeting where the employer asks the applicant questions in order to find out if they are suitable for the job
Compare the 2 main methods of recruitment
Internal recruitment is when a job vacancy is filled by someone who is already working for the company. External recruitment is when a job vacancy is advertised and filled by someone outside the business. Internal recruitment involves advertising using newsletters or notice boards whereas external recruitment involves advertising using government job centres or the internet.
Name the main methods of selection
Application forms, CVs, references, testing and interviews
State 4 methods other than training that a company can use to motivate staff
Recognise strengths through the appraisal process.
Use an appropriate payment system to recognise and reward successful working.
Offer good working conditions and flexible working practices.
Reduce employee dissatisfaction by promoting good employee relations
Describe CVs
CVs are documents prepared by job applicants that provide a short summary of the applicant’s work experience, education, qualifications and interests and hobbies.
Describe references
References are comments on the applicant by someone who knows the applicant and what they are capable of
