What do a sunken and bulging fontanelle indicate?
Sunken: severe dehydration, skin turgor
Bulging: inflammation, swelling, increased intracranial pressure
What is Caput succedaneum?
Fluid accumulation between the skin and periosteum due to trauma during delivery
What is choanal atresia?
A congenital disorder where the back of the nasal passage is blocked by abnormal bony soft tissue due to failed recanalization of the nasal fossae during fetal development
What is Pierre robin sequence?
A condition present at birth in which the infant has a smaller than normal lower jaw and a tongue that falls back in the throat and difficulty breathing
What is a diaphragmatic hernia? List 3 signs and symptoms
An abnormal opening in the diaphragm
- Decreased breath sounds
- Scaphoid abdomen
- Cyanotic
What is gastroschisis?
A congenital defect in the anterior abdominal wall where the abdominal contents protrude freely
What is omphalocele?
A defect located at the umbilicus where intestines protrude through the opening and are covered by fine membranes
What is myelomeningocele?
A type of spina bifida where the backbone doesn’t close before birth
The spinal cord and meninges may protrude through the child’s back
In some cases skin covers the spinal cord
What is the palmar grasp reflex?
Push finger tip into baby’s palm, baby should wrap their fingers and yours
What is the Rooting reflex
Stroke infants cheek, baby should attempt to suckle
What is the Moro reflex?
Hold infant and drop carefully, baby should extend and retract arms

M- mask (right size and fit)
R- reposition head to open airway
Try ventilation again
S- suction mouth and nose
Try ventilation again
O- open mouth
Try ventilation again
P- increase pressure of ventilation
A- alternate/ advanced airway
Try ventilation again
When should you begin PPV without supplemental oxygen in the neonate resus?
If any of the following is present
Heart rate less than 100
Apnea
Gasping
Foreign body airway obstruction removal in a conscious infant
5 back blows followed by 5 chest thrusts repeatedly until expelled or unconscious
Foreign body obstruction removal in an unconcious infant
15 compressions, check airway, 2 breaths
Repeat
What range should suction pressure be at for infants?
Decrease suction pressure to 60-80 mm/Hg
How long do you suction infants?
5 seconds only
How long do you suction children?
10 seconds
1 rescuer infant cardiac arrest
30:2 5 cycles/ 2 minutes
2 rescuer infant cardiac arrest

10 cycles/2 minutes
