signs and symptoms
sign- something you see, feel or touch and can validate
symptom- something the patient describes
gurgling
fluid in the upper airway
snoring
tongue has fallen back and is blocking the airway
first vitals taken
baseline vitals- pulse, BP, temperature
SAMPLE
SAMPLE is used to ask questions and interview the patient
sign and symptoms, allergies, medication, pertinent past, last intake, events
OPQRST
the āsā in sample
onset, provocation, quality, radiation, severity, time
AVPU
AVPU is used in level of consciousness
alert, verbal, pain, unresponsive
DCAPBTLS
used to remember what were looking for when touching a person during an assessment
deformities, contusions, abrasions, punctures, burns, tenderness, lacerations, swelling
scene size up
immediately upon arrival the EMT looks for MOI(mechanism of injury) IOS(index of suspicion), number of patients, help needed
general impression
EMT develops a plan of action from the time the call is received until the first few minutes of arrival
initial(primary) assesment
used in life threatening situations and treat them immediately when found
AVPU, CC(chief complaint), ABCDE
general(secondary) assesment
SAMPLE, vitals, and physical assessment
detailed assesment
performed in general assessment. head to toe 90 seconds
ongoing assesment
start over at AVPU. every 5 minutes for unstable. 15 minutes for stable
