pulling inward of the intercostal muscles of the chest or excessive use of neck muscles
retractions
Rate, rhythm, quality & depth should be assessed by:
- looking
- listening
- feeling
- auscultating
Range of respirations per min.
Adult- 8-20
Child- 15-30
Elderly- approx. 20
even though the pt. is working harder to breathe, the respiratory rate & tidal volume are still adequate
respiratory distress
occurs when the respiratory rate and/or tidal volume is insufficient
respiratory failure
occurs when the pt. completely stops breathing
respiratory arrest
gasping type breaths. Usually soon after a pt. goes into cardiac arrest
agonal respirations
force air into pts. who are not breathing adequate or at all.
positive pressure ventilation (PPV)
