assessing aerobic fitness Flashcards

1
Q

what are the 3 main energy pathways?

A
  • phosphocreatine system (anaerobic alactic)
  • anaerobic glycolysis (lactic)

Q

what plays a role in the ability to reach VO2 max?

A
  • fats and CHO are used during aerobic exercise, which is measured by VO2 max

Q

what does aerobic fitness measure?

A
  • the ability to consume O2 to perform exercise. (VO2)
  • the ability to consume oxygen to perform maximal exercise (VO2max)

Q

what is VO2max?

A
  • when O2 is measured during exercise.
  • the max volume of O2 one can comesume during exhausting exercise or max rate of O2.

Q

what is (1) absolute and (2) relative VO2?

A
  1. absolute
    - total volume of O2 taken into the body
    - measured in L/min or mL/min
  2. relative
    - volume of O2 taken into the body relative to body weight.
    - measured in ml/ kg/ min

Q

what are the influencers of VO2 max?

A
  • mode of exercise (what exercise are they doing)
  • heredity (heart size, lung capacity)
  • age
  • sex
  • physical training
  • body composition

Q

what is the difference between VO2 max peak and plateau.

A

peak
- is when you reach the max amount of O2 someone can consume and then there is a decrease in exercise performance.

plateau
- is someone who reaches there max but they don’t increase or decrease in performance.

Q

when selecting which aerobic fitness test you would do, what would you consider?

A
  • what are the reasons for the test
  • who is the client being tested
  • is maximal or sub maximal test recommended
  • is it reliable and valid.

Q

what are direct maximal tests?

A
  • this is considered to be the most valid measure of functional capacity of the aerobic system.
  • you have to wear a mask as it is a direct measurement of VO2 and VCO2.

Q

what is indirect maximal test?

A
  • this is a test in which is voluntary by the individual performing it. and they decide when they stop (beep test)
  • predicts VO2 max using equations

Q

what are indirect vo2 tests pros and cons?

A

pros
- test alot of people quickly

con
- people work in groups
- people with lower body injuries for more prone to re injuring.

Q

what things must someone use for sub maximal VO2 testing?

A
  • steady state heart rate for each exercise
  • HR, VO2, workload
  • HRmax 220-age (submaximal is 85% of the predicted HRmax)
  • mechanical efficiency.

Q

in post exercise, what are the aerobic recovery procedures?

A
  1. active recovery. after termination of aerobic activity have the client slowly bring down there HR with very light exercise.
  2. after active recovery client can sit in a chair to help reduce HR.
  3. measure the clients HR and BP, if it is still high then have them sit for another 2 minutes.
