assesment 1 Flashcards
what is an atom ?
the smallest part of an element.
what is an element ?
an element contains only one type of atom.
what is a compound?
two or more elements chemically bonded with eachother.
what is a mixture?
contains two or more elements or compounds, they are not chemically bonded.
whats is filteration?
a process that separates mixtures of insoluble solids and liquids.
what is crystallisation?
a process that separates a soluble solid from a solvent by evaporating the liquid to leave crystals.
what is distillation?
a process that separates a mixture of liquids based on their boiling points.
what is chromatography ?
a process that separates mixtures by how quickly they moved through a stationary phrase.
what is an isotope?
An atom of the same element with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons.
what is the relative atomic mass?
an average value of mass that takes account of the abundance of the isotope of the element.
What is the plum pudding model and who made it?
plum pudding model shows that the atom is a ball of positive charge with negative electrons embedded in it was incorrect and JJ Thompson designed the plum pudding model.
what is the nuclear model and who made it?
The nuclear model has a positive nucleus and electrons in shells. Rutherfords found the nuclear model.
what is the mass number?
The total numbers of protons and neutrons.
What is the atomic number?
The number of protons (the number of electrons is the same in an atom)
what is the electron configuration?
Electrons fill the first energy level first and the maximum electrons are two electrons in the first shell eight in the second and eight in the third.
