assesment 1 Flashcards
Briefly explain the components of the ShowMatch PA system and their function. 5/6
LAMIA
Loudspeakers - Foh, monitors, FX FoH, control the volume and actually get the
Audience to hear it with quality
Amplifiers - amplify the music so audience can hear instruments
and variety of sounds equal level
Mixing Console - an electronic device for mixing audio signals,
used in sound recording and reproduction and sound reinforcement systems. Inputs to the console include microphones, signals from electric or electronic instruments, or recorded sounds.
Input Devices: Microphones, line level sources, DI Boxes, Instruments, Humans
audio input device is a piece of hardware that sends audio or sound data to the computer
Accessories: Live sound accessories that you need to
Make performance: stands, cables etc. (Stands, Bracketry, Cables)
Outboard: (System Management, Dynamics, Effects, Playback,
Demonstrate safe power up procedure of the complete ShowMatch PA System
Take blue strips plug them in at top
Turn on power units
Turn on with green sign
Unmute at bottom (far right)
turn on monitors
Briefly explain the difference between the front of house and monitor systems
The main or front-of-house (FOH) system amplifies the onstage sounds for the main audience. The monitor system is driven by a mix separate from the front-of-house system. This mix typically highlights the vocals and acoustic instruments so they can be heard over the electronic instruments and drums.
Patch aux cable into FoH console and monitor the signal as a stereo pair in FoH
Speaker system using Ipad or phone through the FOH system so you get sound coming from the main speakers
Ascertain why the aux signal is not audible
Sabotage one - checked everything is patched correctly and that the wires are plugged in, levels set, things on etc.
Patch a Microphone in on stage, and monitor the signal on the FoH Console, out of the FoH PA
Standard FOH PA system,
Plug mic into bottom rack of side stage, check levels in FOH system check if its working in the FOH, make sure the sends are correct and the wedges and foh system is on correctly and levels are correct
Patch a Microphone in on stage, and monitor the signal on the Monitor Console, and out of a directed monitor
Same as patching mic on stage but instead doing it from the monitor desk and using monitor signals
Patch a simple stereo pair of speakers from the FoH console and monitor the Aux input on them
The standard speakers, two wedges plug it in the back and monitor it from the FOH
Demonstrate safe Power down procedure of the complete ShowMatch PA System
Mute bose system
Make sure all levels are down
Turn off monitors and speakers
Turn off green button
Turn off monitor rack
Patch the keyboard on stage, monitor the signal on the FoH Console and out of the FoH PA
Connect to Keyboard wedge, patch it in correctly using correct system and monitor it from FoH using the correct fader, make sure its plugged in correctly
Ascertain why a local speaker is not working
Sabotage - have a look if its all patched correctly and if its even on in the first place,
Briefly explain the difference between Active and Passive loudspeaker systems
Active speakers have an in-built power amplifier and just need a power source (or battery) to operate, where passive speakers require an external power amplifier to operate. In short, you need an amplifier for passive speakers, you don’t with active speakers.
Differences include passive needing no local power requirements and greater amplifier choice
Active have built in amplifiers and give longer balance audio runs (uses three conductors to carry the audio signal)
Briefly highlight any Health and Safety issues you think are important to the Live Sound industry
Hearing Loss - Understanding DB ratios and dosages, give your ears a break and wear protection. Apps that can determine SPL
Electrocution - wet hands or water etc
Careful with stage production e.g stage design collapse
Tripping over wires and hardware,
Making sure risers arnt going to collapse
Explain the key differences between the roles of FoH engineer, monitor engineer and stage technician
FOH engineer: a person dealing with live sound reinforcement. This usually includes planning and installation of loudspeakers, cabling and equipment and mixing sound during the show.
Monitor engineer: a person running foldback sound during a live event so musicians can hear themselves while performing. Monitor engineers usually have a separate audio system from the FOH engineer so can satisfy the requirements of each performer on stage with their own individual mixes
Stage technician: general term applied to the more physical aspects of setting up a live show e.g plugging in mics, setting up amps, pedals, instruments and equipment - responsible for logistics in a live gig (rigging)
