Complete participant
researcher is a member of the group being studied who conceals their researcher role from the group.
Participant-as-observer
the researcher is a member of the group being studied, and the group is aware of the research activity.

Observer-as-participant
the researcher is not a member of the group, and is interested in participating as a means for conducting better observation (group is aware).
Complete observer
the researcher has no interaction with the community & the public being studied is unaware of being observed.
Manifest content analysis
concrete surface content.
Latent content analysis
the underlying meaning behind information.
Institutional documents
- Not peer reviewed, therefore not academic.
- Ex: statistical records, government documents.
Professional publications
Provides information on social positions/power in relation to particular topics.
- Secondary research.
- Academic literature.
Access to Information and Privacy (ATIP)
Provides right to access a record under federal control.
- Online request, 5$ fee.
Freedom of Information (FOI)
- Ontario version of ATIP.
- Must be made in writing.
Gatekeepers
Individuals who have the power to grant or deny access to potential research participants.
- Ex: in indigenous communities, the community = gatekeeper.
Bargain
you may need to make a bargain with the gatekeeper, often a promise of confidentiality.
Coding
assigning labels to chunks of your data to identify themes.
