Adherence
An applying bodily “conjunction” within three degrees for planets, or thirteen degrees for the Moon. The two planets are said to be in an “adherence” or “conjoining.”
Engagement
An applying configuration between two planets, within three degrees for planets or thirteen degrees for the Moon. The two planets are said to be “engaged.” Alternatively, the term is sometimes used in a generic sense when two planets move towards each other in an “application,” as opposed to moving away from each other in a “separation” (aporroia), without reference to any degree range.
Enclosure
Either (1) when the degree-based rays of two planets land on either side of a third planet, within seven degrees on each side, with no other planet sending in “intervening” rays within the seven degrees on each side, or (2) when two planets are in close bodily proximity to a third planet (conjunction), with one on each side, with no other planets sending in intervening rays in the interval between them. This is the degree-based version of the concept known as “containment.” Equivalent to Medieval “besiegement.”
Counteraction
(1) when a planet is in the domicile or exaltation of another planet that is contrary to its own sect; or, more commonly, (2) when a planet is well-situated in a chart but its domicile lord is poorly situated.
Domination
A planet that is in the tenth sign relative to another planet is said to “dominate” that planet, or to be “upon the tenth.” It can be either a positive or negative condition depending on whether a benefic or malefic is in the superior position. Domination is a particularly powerful form of “overcoming.”
Striking with a Ray
Also known as “hurling a ray.” Either (1) in reference to an aspect cast from a planet that goes backwards in the order of signs, which is to the right side of the planet, or (2) a degree-based aspect cast backwards in the order of signs so as to strike another planet with that ray. A three-degree “orb” may be implied for the second type, and an applying configuration that is about to be completed is probably the ideal scenario.
Overcoming
When two planets are configured, the planet that is earlier in the order of signs “overcomes,” “prevails,” or has “superiority” over the planet that is later in the order of signs. The earlier planet, which is said to be on the right side, is in the “superior” position over the planet on the left.
