Asorbtion Addiction Model Flashcards
What is the absorption addiction model?
It is a model made by McCutheon that attends to explain why people develop parasocial relationships. It argues that parasocial relationships makes up for deficits in an individual’s real life relationships with celebrities being seen as a away to cope with or escape reality.
They also allow people to develop a sense of personal identity and achieve a sense of fulfilment. People with an addictive nature will escalate through the stages until their parasocial relationship becomes a total pre occupation with a celebrities life.
What are the two components of the absorption-addiction model?
1) Absorption: seeking fulfilment in celebrity worship motivates a person to focus all their attention on the celebrity, become preoccupied with them and identify with them.
2) Addiction: The individual sustains their commitment to the relationship by feeling a stronger and closer involvement with the celebrity. This leads to more extreme behaviours and delusional thinking, ie staking a celebrity because they believe they share mutual feelings
