ASIA Scoring Flashcards
The ASIA examination looks at what 6 things?
Sensory level Motor level Neurological level of injury (NLI) Complete vs. Incomplete injury Sacral sparing Zone of Partial Preservation (complete injuries
How many key dermatomes are tested in the Sensory Level of the ASIA examination?
28
List out the 3 point sensory scale and what each number represents for the scoring.
0 = absent 1 = impaired 2 = normal NT = not tested
What sensory tract looks at light touch?
Dorsal Columns
What sensory tract looks at sharp/dull
Spinothalamic tracts
If the patient is “feeling” PP but is unable to differentiate sharp and dull. The patient is simply sensing what and what is absent?
Simply sensing pressure and PP sensation is absent.
Spinothalamic Tract is absent
For the ASIA examination the sensory level is defined as what?
The level where sensory is normal on both sides of the body.
What is the lowest level that determines normal sensory function on both sides of the body?
The lowest level where you have “2’s” with all the above levels being “2’s”
What is the sequence in which the motor examination is preformed?
Rostral to Caudal
What position is the patient in when the motor examination is being tested?
Supine
List out the 6 point motor scale and what each number represents for scoring purposes.
0 = absent 1 = Muscle twitch 2 = Full active ROM with gravity eliminated 3 = Full active ROM against gravity 4 = Able to generate some resistance 5 = Normal strength
Where is the level of normal motor function scored?
The level at which strength is at least 3/5 with all levels above being 5/5.
ASIA Impairment Scale: A
Complete. No sensory or motor function is preserved in sacral segment S4-5
ASIA impairment Scale: B
Sensory Incomplete. Sensory but no motor function is preserved below the neurologic level and extends through sacral segments S4-5
ASIA impairment Scale: C
Motor incomplete: motor function is preserved below the neurologic level, and most key muscles below the neurologic level have a muscle grade less than 3
