Asia Flashcards
What is a biome?
A biome is a large area characterised by its vegetation, soil, climate and wildlife.
What are the five major types of biomes?
Aquatic, grassland, forest, desert and tundra.
What is an aquatic biome?
Aquatic biomes include both freshwater and marine biomes. Aquatic biomes are bodies of water.
What is a grassland?
Grassland biomes include savannahs and temperate grasslands. They are open regions which dominated by grass and have a warm climate.
What is a forest?
Forest biomes include temperate forests, tropical forests and boreal forests. Forests are dominated by trees. They cover one third of earth and contain much of the worlds terrestrial biodiversity (animal and insect species).
What are deserts?
Deserts are dry areas where rainfall is very low (less than 50cm per year) They cover around 20% of the earth’s surface and can be either hot or cold. They are quite inhospitable for most living things unless it has adapted to the climate.
What is a tundra?
A tundra has extremely inhospitable conditions with extremely low temperatures ranging from -34C° to 12C°. There are two types of tundra, artic & alpine.
What are the impacts of an aging population?
A small work-force as most would be retired. Negative economic cost as workers would have to pay to support the elderly.
