Asexual vs Sexual Reproduction Flashcards
What is reproduction?
the process by which organisms produce offspring
What is asexual reproduction?
- requires one parent
- produces offspring genetically identical to the parent
what type organisms produce asexually?
all prokaryotes and some eukaryotes
types of asexual reproduction?
budding, binary fission, fragmentation
Binary Fission?
parents cell splits into 2 identical daughter cells
Fragmentation?
example of organism
parent organism breaks into pieces and each piece develops into a new organism
eg.starfish
Budding?
example?
parent cell forms a bubble-like bud that stays attached to the parents while it grows and develops. when it is fully developed it breaks away from the parent cell and forms a new organism
eg. yeast, hydra
Regeneration
the organism is capable of regrowing certain body parts
Vegetative Reproduction(Propagation)
New PLANTS are reproduced from roots, stems, or leaves of the parent plant (Ex: Strawberries, Potatoes)
Advantages of asexual reproduction
-rapid: crowd out other organisms
-
Disadvantages of asexual reproduction?
- not genetically diverse(not good at adapting to changing environments)
what is sexual reproduction?
- requires two parents
- offspring produced is a combination of the genetic material of the two parents(genetically unique)
explain the process of sexual reproduction
parents cells produce reproductive cells called gametes. the gametes unite to form offspring
what type of cells are gametes
haploid
haploid?
half the number of chromosomes found in germ cells
